Random Boat Photo

Schoolhouse Beach, Washington Island, WI

The leaves are changing and starting to fall here. I'm already missing our weekend excursions on the boat even though its not nearly time to put the boat away for winter. I'm sure we'll have it out a few more times between now and when the snow flies, and will enjoy it just the same. We'll just have more clothes on!
Stay tuned...

Port Washington, WI Sunday Excursion

We had good intentions of going fishing. Arrived at the launch early in the morning and heard the fishing wasn't that great. Seems to be the story for us this year. Not to be dissuaded however, we put the boat in the water anyway!

We side scanned a couple of interesting objects, and Dan went down to dive the interesting boat shaped one! Turned out to be a rock. A boat shaped rock, but a rock nonetheless. He was happy to be in the water anyway, and can now stop wondering about it. (Save the brain cells Sweetie!)

We pushed the boat up on the beach, fixed a couple of Bloody Mary's and sat on the beach while Gretchen played in the water. We did all of this, and still made it to Schooner's before Packer kickoff!

SPECIAL NOTE: We received an email from our friend Tom P. We met him on Big Cedar Lake back in July. Tom spotted us barreling out of Port. He didn't catch any fish either, but hearing from him was fantastic. We look forward to seeing you again Tom!

Washington Island Labor Day Weekend 2010

What can we say? We LOVE Washington Island!!

We put The Boat on a boat - a ferry to be exact - and headed to the island. Neither of us had been to the island so we didn't know what was in store for us, but we had great expectations, and were not disappointed!

Unique Boat

There were gale warnings on Friday night with 6-7 footers reported in Death's Doorway. Dan decided that if the ferry was going to capsize and we were going over, he would rather do it in daylight. So we parked the boat in Bailey's Grove Campground and headed to the Blue Ox. (We highly recommend both of these very special locations!)

SIDE NOTE: We love being in the water on the boat, but given its versatility, you will often find us parked in campgrounds, where we happily spend the night snuggled up. Very often we are asked if we were cold or got wet during the night and the answer is always no. Of the many times we have slept in the boat, we only needed the heater once, and the only time the sleeping bags get wet is if the boat is not parked on an incline. It is one of our favorite places to sleep.

Putting the boat on a boat seemed rather silly to us until we saw the condition of the lake. There's no doubt the LudaChris could have handled those waves. And Dan and I certainly could have, the question we asked is "Why would we?" So we put the boat on the ferry!

Dan adding a little more brakes to the brakes!

The ride over was a little rough with 6-7 footers crashing over the bow. We made it safe and sound - minus one St. Lawrence River hat, my favorite, now at the bottom of Deaths Door! Once we got to Washington Island, we drove to the Cedar Lodge Resort to meet up with the Scuba group and Russ, the owner of the Inn. (Russ is a great guy. Highly recommend his place too!)

Here's the welcoming committee ordering Bloody Mary's
and Brad introducing Russ to the boat.

The wind was howling and the waves too big for any dive trips so there was only one thing left to do...

Dan & Brad strategically positioned near the ladies restroom
and it pays off!

Our official Bitters prescription from the bitters bar!
(Everyone should close Wolski's!)

The next day we finally got the boat in the water. It was still rough enough that we had to offload some passengers to be able to make it to Washington Harbor. So Dan and I happily rode the waves to the harbor and picked everyone up on Schoolhouse Beach and headed to dive the Pride and the Louisana. The Louisana was so nice and shallow that Dan convinced me to join him and breathing off of the same tank we checked out the wreck. There were a lot of gobi and HUGE Bass down there, and the wreck was pretty impressive too. I am hooked and can't wait to get my certification!!

Here we are enjoying a shore lunch on Schoolhouse Beach.

We always try to suck every ounce of fun out of our time together, so we were not too happy about having to leave the island. We drove around to explore the parts of the island we didn't see on our tour with Brad. We went back to the museum and had lunch at Karly's Bar where we met Bob from Cleveland, an 80-something year old character who up an married the lady that owns the only grocery store on the island. (As with all of our trips, we always meet new people and make new friends. In addition to Bob and Russ, we met Doug and Pat who we are certain will be long-time friends!)

After lunch at Karly's, we decided to get in the ferry line which earlier in the day was at least a mile long. We were happy when we got to the ferry line and discovered that it was only 5 cars deep, and were even happier later on after our cool adventure on the returning ferry!!

The Boat generates a lot of curiosity and we have found that the people who are most attracted to it and curious enough to talk to us are people just like us, who love the water, are adventurous in nature and extremely low key. We love every one of them! This trip we met Captain Joel, the ferry boat captain, who is now another one of our Washington Island friends.

Captain Joel coming to talk to Dan about the boat!

And here's where we ended up - in the helm station
with Captain Joel for the ride back to the mainland.

And the next thing we know we're here:

Engine room tour. Loud & Hot and full of testosterone!

I didn't quite get the whole engine room. It was man heaven. Sure there are two big BIG engines in there. Lots of noise. Lots of power. All I know is the result was this:

Dan coming out of the engine room. A happy happy man!

And that's all we need!

Thanks to everyone who made this trip special, Deep Sixers, Pat & Doug, Russ, Bob & Daughter & Mike at Karly's, The Susan's and the Julies, The hot bathroom chick at Karly's, Bitters bar, Russian Chick at the Community Center, Captain Joel, The museum guy, Mom for the storm cases that kept our stuff dry, and Amber for doing such a great job watching Gretchen!!

Til next time...

Back at the Streich!

We can't seem to get enough of this place! Launched the boat at Calumet Harbor and motored over to the Streich to meet our friends. The weather was great and the water so warm that we were in the water until at least 11pm. Not wanting to move, we spent the night here for the first time. It was a peaceful night with cool breezes to keep the mosquito's away! The next morning we went up the lake to Oshkosh for a burger at the Boat Yard Bar & Grille. Had amazing burgers and headed back to the Streich for the day. We always meet really nice people and have a fantastic time. Agreed we have to make a few more trips back before the summer ends! I'm already pouting at the idea of putting the boat away for winter! Dan assures me that we won't have to do it until early December, but somehow I don't think the Streich will be as much fun when it's 20 degrees out!

For now, we relish this:

Munising, MI August 2010 - Our Birthday Weekend

Lake Superior 70 Degrees and FLAT AS GLASS! We never thought we would have conditions like this on Superior - the treacherous lake - even in August!

The Luda Chris on its second voyage on Superior stayed true to her character. Effortlessly transporting four divers, and two sun worshipers for two days straight, and to top it off threw in a rescue. We are beginning to think she likes showing off!

Day One: Two dives (Smith Moore & Selvick) and a tour of the Pictured Rocks. Spent some time on the sandbar in the middle of the channel where we were certain we could easily be in the Caribbean. We had a shore lunch where Gretchen decided to retrieve some rocks and also draw the attention of the Park Rangers. We also found a creek to play in!

Day Two: Three shallow dives (Bermuda, Hettler & Manhattan) and Murray Bay. After the dives, we pushed the boat into the sand in Murray Bay and enjoyed the scenery. Gretchen decided to clear the water of any debris and hauled rocks and wood out of the water for hours. We watched and shook our heads. (The dog has a problem!)

The rescue... Exhausted we returned to the boat launch with plans for dinner and ?? but waiting at the launch was the Munising Sheriff requesting our assistance. Four kids in a paddle boat were taking on water and without life jackets. He picked the fastest (and coolest) boat at the launch to ask for help. Turns out the Munising department boat was in a state of disrepair so we were his only option. Of course, we welcomed him onboard and start pounding our way back to Murray Bay. Side Note: The Luda Chris can reach speeds of up to 55 mph, however at this speed stuff tends to start flying around! There was S#*& flying EVERYWHERE, and the Sheriff was holding on for dear life. In the middle of all of this, Dan says, "I'm not sure my "flare gun" is legal in Michigan." I groan and secretly hope the Sheriff doesn't notice. We continue to make a beeline for the kids.

Midway there, we hear a pontoon boat has safely recovered the kids (Teenagers!), however the paddle boat is still out there listing in the water and it needed to be recovered. So we continued on where Dan and the Sheriff pulled it onto the side of the boat to let it drain, and then fully placed the entire paddle boat into the back of the Luda Chris! Yup, a whole four person paddle boat will fit into the stern of the boat.

Turns out the four teenagers knew there was a crack in the paddle boat but took it out anyway. They were in 80 feet of water in LAKE SUPERIOR, which is known to be treacherous, WITHOUT LIFE JACKETS. We dropped the paddle boat on the shore and said goodbye to the knuckleheads. After dropping the Sheriff off at the launch, we loaded the boat, grabbed some dinner and crashed!

Thanks to the gang for joining us and to Fred for contributing some of the pictures. (View more of Fred's photos here.) For more information about the dives visit DeepSixScuba.com.

P.S. The Sheriff never said one word about the flare gun!

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

July 26 Close to Home Big Cedar Lake

After one weekend of camping (Which was a blast!) we really missed the boat and had to get on the water! We wanted to try Big Cedar Lake and save the drive to Oshkosh. We discovered that Big Cedar has a flotilla too! WHO KNEW!?

We had a blast and introduced some new friends to the Luda Chris. Had so much fun that I forgot to take pictures!

Lake report: Lots of boat traffic. Jet skis galore. Pontoon haven. Frequent float-bys from Joe Cop. Boat launch was absurd! No parking. Meeting all of those new friends made up for all of it!

Stay tuned... our big birthday weekend trip is coming up.

Dive Trip Two Rivers, WI July 2010

The Luda Chris was out on Lake Michigan this weekend off of Two Rivers, WI to dive the Rouse Simmons, a.k.a. The Christmas Tree Ship.

We estimate we were carrying at least 2500 lbs. worth of extra weight onboard including 6 divers and A LOT of gear. The Luda Chris showed her utility prowess yet again when we encountered a disabled boat on the second dive and towed their 35 footer back to Two Rivers.

Exhausted from all of that work, we shoved her into the sandbar the next day and enjoyed some R&R on the beach.

This picture looks more menacing than it really was. These guys just wanted to see The Boat. And now we have an updated inspection sticker! Yup, EVERYTHING IS LEGAL! (Including that "Flare Gun".)
